How can I find out which systems are online on my network? SNMP is generally used to find out which hosts are actually on line at any particular moment in time. Whereas this produces results, it ignores those systems that do not have an SNMP agent and the general picture of what is on line may be incomplete. Distinct Network Monitor includes a utility to help you find out what systems are up and running on the network and, where possible, to point out if they are also running SMTP, POP, IMAP, FTP or HTTP servers. The Distinct Discover Hosts utility uses different protocols to try to show all systems that are currently using TCP/IP and are on line.
